Over time, cataracts can worsen and cause total blindness in an eye. They tend to develop in both eyes, but fortunately, they don't usually progress at the same rate. Our optometrist at Fifty Dollar Eye Guy, serving Pensacola, FL, and the nearby region, can monitor the progression, optimize your vision through vision correction, and intervene as necessary to prevent the most serious complications.
Definition of Cataracts
A cataract is a clouding over the lens of your eye. As briefly noted above, cataracts tend to develop in each eye, but they don't always progress at the same rate. In the early stages, you may not even know you have a cataract. You might just notice frequent changes in your eye prescription, and you may just chalk it up to having bad vision.
If you have this issue, your vision may look blurry, cloudy, or foggy, like looking through a fogged-up window. You may notice that colors don't look as vibrant, and you can no longer see as well as you used to at night. The affected eye or eyes may become sensitive to light, including lamps and sunlight. You may notice a halo appearing around lights.
The first step to diagnosing cataracts is evaluating your vision during an eye exam. This isn't a condition we can pick up on during your first eye exam because of the gradual nature of this issue. However, if we notice you once had good vision but now have bad vision, we can see there has been a decline in your visual acuity.
Another part of diagnosing cataracts through an eye exam is the dilation exam, which consists of our practitioner looking inside your eye using a specialized magnifying device. We can then determine if you have clouding over the lens of your eye.
Since cataracts are a progressive condition, our eye doctor will continuously provide you with different levels of vision correction through new prescriptions. During this time, we'll monitor the cataract. Once it becomes an issue that even vision correction isn't making enough of a difference, we'll recommend surgery and refer you to a practitioner who provides it. After your diagnosis, we can advise you on ways you can optimize your vision.
