Pediatric Eye Care from a Pensacola, FL, Optometrist
A vision deficit or other problem with a child's eye can affect his or her education. It may lead to the child suffering from headaches on a regular basis. It doesn't help that some problems with the eye can affect his or her appearance, which can make him or her self-conscious. Fortunately, at Fifty Dollar Eye Guy, serving Pensacola, FL, and the surrounding region, we can provide a number of services to help your child once our children's eye doctor diagnoses the problem.
Kids Eye Exam
Our optometrist may provide your little one with a kid's eye exam, which may consist of his or her reading letters or identifying shapes, depending on his or her age and skill level. During the pediatric eye exam, we may make sure your child's eyes are working together and evaluate him or her for any eye-tracking problems.
The test will also consist of our practitioner looking into your child's eyes using a specialized magnifying device. Through this exam, we can diagnose conditions like pediatric cataracts.
While rare, it's possible for a child to have glaucoma, and if your little one has symptoms of it, we can diagnose it for certain.
Vision Deficits
If your child has a vision deficit, we can diagnose it. Children most often experience nearsightedness, which is when he or she can see up close but struggles to see far away. A kid can also have farsightedness – a vision deficit that occurs when your little one can see far away but not up close. This, however, isn't as common of an occurrence.
Children can also develop astigmatism. In fact, some kids will have it upon birth. Astigmatism can worsen over time, which is why we recommend having an optometrist diagnose it early through a pediatric eye exam. Then, the practitioner can provide monitoring and vision correction.
Eye Problems
Some children struggle to look at text and move their eyes along with it. This can hinder reading comprehension and fluency. A kid may develop lazy eye – an eye problem that happens when one eye isn't doing its job. This issue also tends to occur when one eye can focus better than the other.
Strabismus, also known as hypertropia or crossed eyes, occurs when there's an abnormal alignment of the eyes.
