Whether you're a history buff or not, the Colonial Archaeological Trail is a wonderful way to learn more about Pensacola's rich colonial past. This walking tour features multiple historic sites throughout the downtown area.

The trail is a collaboration between the UWF Archaeology Institute, the City of Pensacola, and other local historical organizations. It is a fascinating tour and popular with all ages.

Locations

Pensacola is home to many historical sites and ruins that tell the story of the area’s past. A great way to see them is by taking the Colonial Archaeological Trail.

This 1.7-mile tour takes visitors through the historic village center and stops at major 18th-century buildings. It also includes a visit to Fort George.

At the Commanding Officer’s Compound, guests can learn about military life in the 18th century. This site was the British and Spanish headquarters for their military forces during the colonial period.

The outdoor exhibits are ADA-accessible and offer shade and seating for visitors to enjoy the historical interpretation of this location. They include the foundations of several British military kitchens and the British Government House.

Pensacola Exhibits

Located in the downtown area of Pensacola, the Colonial Archaeological Trail is a great way to get involved with the local history. It is a fun family-friendly activity that can be enjoyed by visitors of all ages.

In addition to outdoor exhibits, the trail also has a new Interpretive Master Plan that highlights the many historic sites in the Pensacola area. This will make it much easier for visitors to locate the most relevant historical sites while they are on the tour.

For example, the Commanding Officer’s Compound is an interesting location to visit as it was home to both the Spanish and British military forces during different periods of time. The site includes the ruins of a colonial Commanding Officer’s home and associated refuse pits, as well as the foundations of a colonial ordinance building. The remains of an American Period Masonic Lodge are also visible here. Admission

The Colonial Archaeological Trail is a walking tour that showcases a variety of historic sites throughout downtown Pensacola. This self-guided journey is completely free and features informative signs that will guide you to some of the city’s most interesting attractions.

The trail is a joint project of the University of West Florida, Florida Public Archaeology Network, and local historical organizations. This interpretive trail focuses on the Spanish, British, and American occupations of Pensacola.

One of the most exciting stops on the trail is the Commanding Officer’s Compound, a site where Spanish and British military forces would have had their headquarters. The site has recently been renovated and reinterpreted in order to better teach visitors about the history of this location. It also includes a barrel well and a cold storage area that the Spanish would have used to keep food fresh.
