Types Of Eye Surgeries
There are a number of different types of eye surgeries. Some are cosmetic procedures while others are necessary to treat serious conditions.
Laser vision correction is one type of surgery that uses a laser to reshape your cornea. It is used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
LASIK
LASIK is a refractive surgery that can correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. During the procedure, an excimer laser (an ultraviolet laser) is used to reshape the cornea so that light rays are more focused on the retina, which transmits visual information to the brain. During the first part of the surgery, your surgeon will make a small flap in your cornea with an instrument called a microkeratome or a laser called a femtosecond. Then, the flap is lifted back, and another laser is used to reshape the tissue underneath.
The flap is replaced and the eye is numbed with drops to keep you from blinking or moving your eyes. A suction ring is then placed on your eye to keep it still while the flap heals. More
LASEK
LASEK is a laser vision correction procedure that can be a good choice for patients who have thinner corneas. The procedure is similar to LASIK, but the top layer of cells (the epithelium) is not removed in LASEK.
The eye's outer surface is treated with an alcohol solution to expose the middle (stromal) corneal layer. An excimer laser then sculpts this layer to improve the eye's ability to focus light correctly on the retina.
During the procedure, a special contact lens is placed over your eye to help heal it faster. It remains in place for about three days after surgery.
Like LASIK, LASEK is a surgical procedure that involves a topical anesthetic to numb your eye. After the anesthesia wears off, you may experience mild to moderate discomfort in your eye during the early healing process.
PRELEX
PRELEX is a surgical procedure to treat presbyopia, the loss of flexibility in your eye lens. It reduces your dependence on glasses and helps you lead a clearer, healthier life.
The surgery involves removing your natural lens with a micro-incision (less than 3 mm or 1/8 inch) and replacing it with a multifocal intraocular lens. The new implant allows you to see clearly at near, intermediate, and distance, reducing or eliminating your need for glasses.
Many patients remark on the improvement in their vision almost immediately. They also notice they’re able to resume most of their normal activities within a few days.
PRELEX is a safe and effective treatment for patients over 50 who are dissatisfied with their eyesight or not suitable candidates for cataract surgery. You may be a good candidate for this procedure if you have no other health issues and want to reduce your dependency on glasses or contacts.
Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)
Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is a procedure that replaces your eye’s natural lens with an artificial lens implant. This reduces reliance on glasses or contact lenses, which can cause eye strain and lead to vision problems over time.
The procedure is safe and can be performed under local anesthesia with numbing drops or with a local block. The surgery is usually completed within an hour, and most patients report immediate improvement in their vision after surgery.
As with LASIK, the operation is generally best for younger patients with a healthy natural lens with good flexibility and clarity. As you get older, however, RLE is less likely to be a suitable option because the flexibility and clarity of the natural lens decline.
The most common reason for visual deterioration after RLE is posterior capsule opacification (PCO). This is an accumulation of fluid behind the IOL and can be treated with a minor laser procedure called YAG capsulotomy.
