NAS Whiting is home to the United States Navy's training air wing, Training Air Wing FIVE. This wing includes the Commander, Training Air Wing FIVE, three primary training squadrons, and support personnel. The wing produces more than 1,200 pilots annually.

It Was the Home Of the Navy's First Jet Training Unit

Whiting Field is an aircraft training facility for the United States Navy. It has two airfields - North Field and South Field. The North Field is used for primary flight training. It Was the Home of The Navy's First Pow Camp for German Prisoners of War

NAS Whiting Field was built during World War II. The airfield, located north of Milton, Florida, was initially used as a training facility for naval aviators. However, it also served as a POW camp for German prisoners of war.

The Navy applied to the Army for assistance in building a POW camp, and the Army granted the request on July 10, 1945. The camp was to be built by Army personnel. The first 100 prisoners to arrive at the Whiting camp worked on preparing the camp for the arrival of the 125 remaining German POWs. They worked on constructing a canteen, barber shop storage shed, and reading room. They also repaired perimeter fencing, helped with soil erosion, and performed other grounds upkeep.
