Naval Live Oaks Preserve

Located on the Gulf Islands National Seashore, the Naval Live Oaks Preserve is an icon of the United States' historic naval shipbuilding tradition. The area is home to an extensive network of trails that explore native plant communities. In addition to the network of trails, the Naval Live Oaks area has a picnic area, a pavilion, and a day-use area. This beautiful area is open to the public, including organized youth groups. It is open 8 am - sunset daily. The area offers visitors access to a picnic area with a view of Pensacola Bay, picnic tables, restrooms, and a large campfire ring.

The Naval Live Oaks area has been protected by the National Park Service since 1971. It is one of the oldest federally protected forests in the U.S. The forest is a dense hardwood community with a shoreline along Santa Rosa Sound and Pensacola Bay. During the early 19th century, live oak was the number one choice for warship construction. This dense and strong tree provided the timber needed for shipbuilding. Next article
