The Blackwater Heritage State Trail

Long-Term Plan To Connect The Trail Through The City Of Milton To The Village Of Bagdad

In 2010, the Blackwater Heritage State Trail was designated as a National Recreational Trail. It runs from the historic town of Milton, Florida, north to the Naval Air Station-Whiting Field. The trail is nearly 10 miles long.

Part of the Florida Statewide Greenways and Trails Program, the Blackwater Heritage State Trail is a partnership between the U.S. Navy, the state of Florida, and the City of Milton. This trail is a crucial link in the multiple-use trail system of Santa Rosa County.

A Well-Marked Mile And Half-mile Markers

The trail passes several creeks and a longleaf pine forest. There are nine wooden bridges that cross the trail at various points.

There are four convenient trailheads along the trail. Each provides parking and restroom facilities. One of the trails is open to bikers and inline skaters.

The Blackwater Heritage State Trail is a joint venture between the U.S. Navy and the Florida Department of Transportation and Environmental Protection. These departments manage the trail and are part of Florida Forever.

Alignment with The Historic Florida and Alabama Railroad

The Alabama and Florida railroad rolled into town in the not-so-distant past. In the heyday of the railroad, it ran a 78-mile short line route from Cowarts, Alabama to Greenwood, Florida. At its height, it had a fleet of fancy steam locomotives and a number of slickly reconstructed Victorian rail cars. It was the forerunner to the modern-day Alabama, Florida, and Gulf railroad. A spinoff shortline known as the Seaboard Coast Line was acquired in the mid-1980s. By the time the last surviving member of the original gang of four departed, the line was on its last legs. Today, the line has been largely relegated to history books and history buffs.

For a brief period in the late 1960s, Alabama and Florida were a bona fide powerhouse of a railroad. On the bright side, the railroad had a knack for building some of the best train stations in the state. This led to a number of oohs and aahs from the likes of politicians and other civic and industrial leaders.

Bike Lanes Added to County Road 191 from the Blackwater Heritage State Trail

For equestrians, there is an unpaved equestrian trail that parallels the asphalt paved trail. At the Equestrian Trailhead on CR 191 (Munson Highway), there is a parking area, potable water, and covered picnic benches.
